Tall buildings block me from both sides, dark rain soaks my clothes and pools on the hard ground beneath me. I lie there, my blood slowly pouring out from my body. The man who had done this to me was a stranger, his face wouldn't stand out in a crowd. His blade had sliced my flesh, while he cursed my name, all for a bit of money.
Because that's the kind of place this is.
I can feel the chill of death start to seep into my bones, and I realize this is my last moment of life. Then, as I stare up at the dark sky, fury and anger at how soon my time here is ending, I hear a voice;
"Would you like to make a contract?"
A sweet, haunting sound. At once, I saw I had a choice. Die, or live. But the latter would come at a great price; a price would I be able to pay? Turning to face the shadows, I focused my darkening vision on the pair of crimson eyes that watched from the shadows.
Because that's the kind of place where I live, where your nightmares are real and your soul is their fodder.
In Contract City.
